From the Smart City to the Smart Grid: The Role of IoT

26 December, 2017

View facebook event

In association with the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, RUET and IEEE RUET Student Branch, IEEE RUET IAS Student Branch Chapter arranged a seminar entitled “From the Smart City to the Smart Grid: The Role of IoT” on 26th December 2017 at RUET Auditorium.

IoT means the ‘Internet of things’. It’s not just a name, it’s the key to the future. If we dream of a city that is safe, secure and environmentally sustainable, issues of public safety, city planning, industry facilitation, resource utilization, energy conservation, traffic control, telemedicine, home care, and any other human needs are to be ensured. To accomplish this, the integration of a large number of IoT devices is required. But the smart city will still not be perfect unless a large electric grid which includes a variety of operational and energy measures including smart meters, smart appliances, renewable energy resources, etc. which is called a smart grid exists. There are a lot of scopes for improvement in this sector. Considering all these IEEE RUET IAS Student Branch Chapter organized a seminar entitled “From the Smart City to the Smart Grid: The Role of IoT”.

Speaker’s profile:
Prof. Dr. Saifur Rahman, PhD
Joseph Loring Professor of electrical engineering
Virginia Tech Advanced Research Institute
Arlington, Virginia, USA
President, IEEE Power & Energy Society

With the association of IEEE RUET Student Branch and Department of EEE, RUET; IEEE RUET IAS Student Branch Chapter arranged a daylong workshop entitled “Solar Home System: Design, Installation & Maintenance” on 02 December, 2017 at ME Seminar Room, RUET.

Solar Energy is considered to be one of the main weapons to fight against global warming and CO2 emission. Scientists and technologists are considering it as a realistic alternative source of energy for future because of its various potentials. Many countries in the world are spending a huge amount of financial assets for doing researches on how to make solar energy more user friendly and bring this to everyone’s life. A number of big companies are spending their capitals as well as their valuable time for solar energy which is now-a-days stated as “the energy of future”.

Also in order to create alternating job opportunities and for the welfare of humankind Solar Energy is being considered to be an effective solution source. Expectedly in such a developing country like ours, the demand of energy is very high and the sources of energy are inadequate compared to the demand. So from the perspective of our country, Solar Energy is very important. For the proper implementation of Solar Energy among people, the technology sector should be the most concerned ones. It’s a demand of our situation that the students of electrical sectors should be well acquainted to Solar Energy and its possibilities in the power sector. Considering all of this IEEE RUET IAS Student Branch Chapter organized a workshop entitled “Solar Home System: Design, Installation & Maintenance”.
